Part of the main site at Mystery Hill
In a previous post “Meditating in The Monk’s Cave”, I briefly mentioned Mystery Hill in Salem, New Hampshire, known as “America’s Stonehenge”. Consisting of a central site where the largest structures are located-Including many small stone chambers, a ceremonial table with a four and a half ton center piece and an “oracle chamber”-and many standing stones set up in circles around the site for a mile or so, the oldest structures at Mystery Hill have been determined by radiocarbon dating to be approximately 4,000 years old. Mystery Hill is astronomically aligned and is believed by many to have been built by bronze age Celtic settlers of the new world due to it’s similarity to Celtic stone sites and especially because of apparent Celtic Ogham writings discovered at the site and at many similar, smaller locations throughout New England. The site may have been used more recently by the Underground Railroad.
After my experiences meditating in my local “Druid cave”, I decided to visit Mystery Hill. I made plans with my spiritually-aware cousin who lives near Salem and headed out on a Sunday afternoon. With a little help from some locals we found the site, which has been owned and maintained by the Stone family for the past four decades. About half a mile from the parking area we spotted the first stone chamber leading to the main site. We walked around a bit and I took some pictures

There were a variety of interesting features and structures at the site (a guidebook is available at the visitor’s center), but the most interesting of all to us was the Oracle Chamber, which we could walk through and which was clearly designed by the Celts, Native Americans or whoever built it for ceremonial purposes.

I began to meditate and tune in to the energy of the place. I could sense that although damage had been done to the site (in the 1840s 10%-40% of the stones were removed by quarrymen), very strong metaphysical energy still existed there. I feel that it was primarily a place of healing. After leaving the oracle chamber we observed (from a platform above it) the ceremonial table in this picture:

The central slab weighs over four tons
We had viewed the main site at that point, and we split up-my cousin went to meditate in the oracle chamber while I walked along the “astronomical trail” (the entire site is astronomically aligned, including solar, lunar and stellar alignments). Every 50 or 100 feet (connected by stone walls) was a standing stone similar to this one

I returned to the visitor’s center to wait for my cousin. While there I looked at some of the apparent Ogham inscriptions found at the site, representing the Celtic Sun God Bel. When my cousin returned he told me his meditation had been extremely deep and powerful, and that he had a strong feeling that the main purpose of the site had been healing.
